Computer Repair Procedure: Shutdown Issues

Problem: Computer Does Not Turn Off or Turns On By Itself

When Computer Does Not Turn Off:

  1. Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds until the computer powers off completely
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds
  3. Press the power button to turn the computer back on

When Computer Turns On By Itself:

Solution 1: Run SupportAssist Tool

  1. Press Windows key + Q
  2. Type "SupportAssist" in the search box
  3. Select SupportAssist (App) from results
  4. Click "Start Now" to run diagnostics
  5. Follow any recommended fixes from test results

Solution 2: Prevent Devices From Waking Computer

  1. Identify wake-capable devices: 
    • Press Windows key + Q
    • Type "cmd"
    • Right-click Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator"
    • Type powercfg -devicequery wake_armed and press Enter
    • Note all listed devices
  2. Disable wake capability for each device: 
    • Open Device Manager (Windows key + Q, type "device manager")
    • Find each device noted above
    • Right-click the device and select Properties
    • Select the Power Management tab
    • Uncheck "Allow this device to wake up computer"
    • Click OK

Solution 3: Disable Fast Startup

  1. Press Windows key + Q
  2. Type "control panel"
  3. Select Control Panel
  4. Click Hardware and Sound
  5. Select "Choose what the power buttons do"
  6. Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)"
  7. Click "Save changes"

Solution 4: Disable Automatic Maintenance

  1. Press Windows key + Q
  2. Type "control panel"
  3. Select Control Panel
  4. Click System and Security
  5. Select Security and Maintenance
  6. Click the Maintenance drop-down menu
  7. Select "Change maintenance settings"
  8. Uncheck "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer"
  9. Click OK

Solution 5: Disable All Wake Timers

  1. Press Windows key + Q
  2. Type "control panel"
  3. Select Control Panel
  4. Click Hardware and Sound
  5. Select "Edit power plan"
  6. Click "Change advanced power settings"
  7. Expand "Sleep" option
  8. Expand "Allow wake timers"
  9. Set both "On Battery" and "Plugged In" options to "Disabled"
  10. Click Apply, then OK
